Three ideas that don't always apply

Bi-national relationships often bring to mind many challenges: different countries and languages, major cultural differences and balancing. So far, I've shared a lot about these challenges, but we don´t need to see it that complicated either. There are three myths I'd like to talk about.

Myth 1: Binational couples are always traveling

It's a common belief that binational couples are constantly traveling around the world to visit both partners' home countries. While traveling can play a role in seeing family and friends, it is not necessarily more common than for non-binational couples. Many binational couples lead a daily life that is not so different from others. The cost and time involved in traveling can often be limiting. Yet these are usually the same summer vacations that other couples and families plan every year.

Myth 2: Language barriers are a constant problem

Another misconception is that binational couples constantly struggle with language barriers. In fact, different mother tongues can be a challenge, as I have already described here. But many couples find creative ways to communicate. They often develop their own mix of languages or use a common third language. This diversity can even enrich communication and strengthen the relationship.

Myth 3: Cultural differences lead to frequent conflicts

It is often assumed that cultural differences in binational relationships constantly lead to the need to find compromises. While cultural differences can be an issue, many couples develop a deeper appreciation for each other's perspectives. They learn to celebrate differences and use them to enrich the relationship. Mutual respect and curiosity are often stronger than the challenges. It can also be beneficial to the relationship because communication is challenged at an earlier stage of the relationship. I have noticed that many binational couples talk to each other a lot and Exchange ideas.

Using the challenges as opportunities

Binational relationships do have their peculiarities, but many of these supposed “problems” are also opportunities. As in any relationship, communication, understanding and respect are key. Ultimately, it is these universal values that make a relationship successful - regardless of nationality.
