However, I don't want to leave out the strengths. In my experience, an exciting process usually develops in which the initial difficulties lead to communication developing a particular strength in many of these relationships, precisely because it is so challenged.<\/p>\r\n<p>Partners from different cultures bring a special variety of experiences and perspectives into their relationship. It is important to learn how to use these correctly.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Initial difficulties in communication<\/h3>\r\n<ol>\r\n\t<li><strong>Cultural differences<\/strong>Every culture has its own communication styles, norms and values. So-called culture shock is common, especially at the beginning of the relationship. What is considered polite in one culture may be perceived as impolite or inappropriate in another. The misunderstandings that arise can literally shock the partners. They would not have expected something like that.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/dialogaryconstruir.com\/en\/sprachbarrieren-in-binationalen-beziehungen\/\"><strong>Language barriers<\/strong><\/a>Often partners in binational relationships do not speak the same language fluently. Misunderstandings can arise when words are not translated exactly or when nuances of language are lost. Not being able to explain something to your partner in your own language can be very frustrating. Also, certain content, books or song lyrics are not always available in translated form and we would like to share them with our partner.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Different ways of expressing emotions<\/strong>In some cultures, open expression of emotions is valued, while in others, restraint is preferred. This can lead to partners misinterpreting each other's feelings.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Prejudices and stereotypes<\/strong>Prejudices about your partner's culture can put a strain on communication. Often these prejudices or stereotypes are also unconscious. They can lead us to hurt our partner or not take them seriously at certain points.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Relationship expectations<\/strong>Different ideas about roles and responsibilities in the relationship can lead to conflicts. These expectations should be discussed openly to avoid misunderstandings.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<h3>How communication strengths can develop<\/h3>\r\n<p>Despite the difficulties mentioned, there are also many strengths that binational couples can develop in their communication. These strengths are often the result of active efforts to overcome misunderstandings and strengthen the relationship.<\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n\t<li><strong>. Empathy and understanding<\/strong>: Binational couples are often even more obviously forced to put themselves in their partner's shoes and talk more. This promotes a deeper understanding of each other and can strengthen the emotional connection.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Creativity in communication<\/strong>: In order to overcome language barriers, these couples often develop creative ways to express themselves. This can lead to new forms of communication that enrich the relationship.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Openness and flexibility<\/strong>: Binational couples often become more open to new perspectives. They repeatedly experience how things can be done differently and thus gain a new perspective on problems in general. They are also more willing to read a guidebook or seek counseling.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Problem-solving skills<\/strong>: Constantly overcoming communication challenges promotes problem-solving skills. They deal more with effective communication options. Couples learn how to approach conflicts constructively, which strengthens their relationship overall.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Deeper emotional intimacy<\/strong>: The communication challenge is a shared challenge that they can only solve together. By working together from the outset, binational couples often develop a deeper emotional intimacy. They learn the importance of clearly communicating their needs and desires.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<h3>Communication is an ongoing process<\/h3>\r\n<p>The challenges that binational couples overcome provide a very vivid example of this. It is about asking questions with curiosity and openness, and wanting to understand.
